ECDL Foundation organised the first European Round Table on Digital Literacy, Skills and e-Inclusion at the end of 2011, hosted in the European Parliament by Mr. Seán Kelly, Member of the European Parliament (EPP).

This event organised under the patronage of European Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes, Commissioner responsible for the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE) took place at the European Parliament, where key European Commission officials, Members of Parliament, National Representatives and stakeholders met to discuss the reality of delivering the goals of the DAE.

Ms. Kroes also presented the keynote address of the event via video link, and emphasised that: “... digital literacy is an issue of fairness and access to opportunity, a socio-economic issue...” Click here for the Agenda.

National representatives from Member States met with high level officials from the European Commission and the European Parliament at the Round Table and discussed the reality of delivering the goals of the DAE, and in particular the goals of the ‘Enhancing Digital Literacy, Skills and Inclusion’ pillar at National Level. There was general consensus by all Member States present to call for a common definition and indicators around digital literacy, and e-skills.

ECDL Foundation recently published the report ‘Delivering the Digital Agenda for Europe’ which analyses the key themes and challenges that going to shape the European skills debate in 2012 and 2013. This report builds on the output of the 1st European Round Table and it incorporates the subsequent work and feedback, gathered from Member State and EU-level participants, in the months following that event.

In 2013, the 2nd European Round Table will be held in conjunction with Member States and a variety of policymakers.
